CBD and the Entourage Effect: What You Need to Know

Mar 25, 2020 | Uncategorized

What us the entourage effect with CBD?

If you’ve been tuned into the CBD community recently, there’s a good chance you’ve heard a lot of discussion of the entourage effect. Some people believe that the entourage effect is extremely important, while others are skeptical that it’s even real. As we learn more about the validity of the entourage effect, it will likely determine a big shift toward either broad-spectrum or full-spectrum CBD or CBD isolate. Here’s more about what we know about the entourage effect as of now.

What Is the Entourage Effect?

To put it simply, proponents of the entourage effect say that CBD will interact with the body differently depending on which other organic hemp compounds are present. That is, CBD will behave differently based on the entourage it brings with it, just like some people. The theory is that other organic compounds in hemp have a synergistic effect with CBD, giving them more influence together than they could have individually.

The entourage effect didn’t get a lot of attention until recently, but some people were actually aware of it back in 1998. Scientists Shimon Ben-Shabat and Raphael Mechoulam suggested that the human endocannabinoid system exhibited the entourage effect based on their observation that inactive molecules boosted the activity of cannabinoids. They said that their observations showed that botanical drugs were more effective than isolated ones.

As far as CBD products, the entourage effect theory suggests that other cannabinoids like CBN and CBV work with the cannabidiol. Even some of the terpenes, such as beta-caryophyllene, are said to increase the interactions between CBD and the body. As we learn more about all of the different terpenes found in hemp, it will help inform our understanding of the entourage effect.

Full-Spectrum CBD

While many in the industry say that whole-plant CBD products are the best, it’s just difficult to say for sure at this stage. Since hemp was prohibited for such a long time in the United States, there haven’t been a lot of opportunities to conduct thorough studies and research. While we have a good deal of anecdotal stories about experiences with hemp products, and specifically CBD, there still isn’t a large body of scientific evidence to support specific claims about the effects of CBD.

The lack of research is even more severe when it comes to the less known cannabinoids like CBN or CBDV. We’re also eager to learn more about the potential effects of terpenes. It’s possible that these organic compounds may have their own effects, or that they may contribute to the entourage effect of CBD. As people continue to study the entourage effect, we’ll start to get a better idea of the benefits of full-spectrum CBD compared to CBD isolate.

Evidence for the Entourage Effect

There are mixed conclusions about the entourage effect. One recent study suggests that there is no entourage effect for CBD. That said, even the authors of the study have said that their work had its limitations. Another researcher, Ethan Russo, has published two different studies to support the entourage effect. As researchers conduct more studies, we can expect to get a better understanding as time goes on.
